A Level GP Tuition – What 18 year olds tell us about Singapore’s Future?

A Level GP Tuition – What 18 year olds tell us about Singapore’s Future? (article)

For JC and Polytechnic students who are applying for the prestigious PSC scholarships or other Government scholarships, it would be useful to look at Mr Eddie Teo’s speech to analyze his thoughts on what type of attributes Government scholarship providers look out for in their potential candidates.

I would summarise his views as follows:

Positive Attributes

  • Our young people are generally aware of the values espoused by our founding fathers (someone pragmatic, responsible, disciplined, frugal, hard-working, well-behaved, family-focused and puts society before self, incorruptibility)
  • Generally showing concern about social mobility and social inequality
  • Being welcoming of greater criteria of what constitutes success in Singapore

Flaws and Weaknesses

  • Do not know much about Singapore’s history (Who is S Rajaratnam? Who is Dr Goh Keng Swee?)
  • Lack of knowledge in current affairs (I personally find that the disinterest in current affairs is not because they are apathetic but rather because they don’t see any impending need to know about what goes on in the world because they have the mindset that it is not going to impact them yet.)
  • Being Risk-Averse (But can we blame them? It’s more of a cultural phenomenon and how our “pragmatist” Singapore narrative became more successful that intended such that we have a generation who prefers to stick to the tried and tested routes rather than to venture into something new. The price on “failure” in Singapore appears to be too high to accept.)
  • Lack of creativity and imagination (Ditto.)

I hope that this would give you some insights on what you can prepare for, should you wish to apply for these scholarships.
