Benedict’s test can be used to detect the presence of disaccharides and monosaccharides.
Correct Concept
Benedict’s test can only be used to test for reducing sugars. Sucrose is a disaccharide but not a reducing sugar, and so cannot be detected using this test.
Misconception 2
We acquire fats through our diet only.
Correct Concept
Our body can meet most of its fat requirements by manufacturing fats from the excess carbohydrates we consume
Misconception 3
Consuming fats is bad for health as it can cause a rise in blood cholesterol levels
Correct Concept
Fats should be consumed in moderation. Saturated fats are bad for health because they can cause a rise in blood cholesterol levels and a higher risk of heart diseases. However; consuming a certain amount of unsaturated fats is helpful in reducing the levels of cholesterol
