The pressure rating of a car tire is typically given to be 210 kPa. This is based on an internal air temperature of 25°C.
A driver decides to inflate the tires of his car to the rated pressure after driving at a high speed for some time, during which the internal air temperature has risen to 40°C.
What will be the drop in pressure in each tire when the temperature has returned to 25°C?
A 9.3 kPa B 10.1 kPa C 78.8 kPa D 200 kP
Answer B
Since V, n, R remains constant,
P1/ T1= p2 / T2
210 / (40 + 273) = p2 / (25 + 273)
p2 = 199.3 kPa
Drop in pressure = 210 –199.9 =10.1 kPa
