Physics Tuition Singapore – Turning Effect of Forces Misconception
Physics Tuition Singapore – Turning Effect of Forces Misconception
Misconception 1
Since moment is a vector quantity, its direction can also be described similar to other vector quantities such as velocity. Therefore, we can describe the direction of a moment as to the North.
Correct Concept
Moment is a type of vector quantity different from other vector quantities such as velocity. Its direction is simply described by a rotational direction (i.e., clockwise or anticlockwise) and not by a linear direction (i.e., up, left, North etc).
Misconception 2
A see-saw always tilts towards the heavier person.
Correct Concept
A see-saw does riot always tilt towards the heavier person. The direction of tilt corresponds to the direction of net moment which also depends on the distance from the pivot. Therefore, the see-saw could tilt towards the lighter person if he is further enough from the pivot.
