Biology Tuition Singapore A Level H2 H1 Biology Tuition – Cord blood
Cord blood is the blood that circulates through the umbilical cord from the foetus to the placenta.
The umbilical cord that remains attached to the placenta has been found to be rich in cord blood stem cells. Cord blood stem cells are the young or immature cells that can transform into other forms of essential blood cell types, such as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
(a) Describe the unique features [UPD] of all stem cells. [3]
1. Stem cells are unspecialized/undifferentiated, there is an absence of tissue-specific structures for specialised function
2. Stem cells are capable of proliferation by mitosis/mitotic division and continually renewing/self-renew themselves for long periods;
3. Stem cells are capable of differentiating into specialised cell types under appropriate conditions;
(b) State the potency of cord blood stem cells. [1]
