Biology Tuition Singapore – Enzymes Misconception
Misconception 1
Rate of reaction is expressed as T, where T represents time.
Correct Concept
Rate of reaction is expressed as 1/T, where T represents the time required for the enzyme to finish catalysing a reaction.
Misconception 2
As the temperature keeps increasing, the activity level of enzymes also increases indefinitely.
Correct Concept
Enzymes are proteins. As the temperature increases, the enzymes affected will become denatured, i.e., lose their original shape. Then they will no longer be effective and their activity may even drop to zero
Misconception 3
As long as the enzyme is still active, the reaction will proceed.
Correct Concept
There is a physical limit on the number of active sites that can bond with the substrate no matter how much substrate there is, provided the enzyme concentration remains the same. Furthermore, the presence of an increased amount of products can inhibit the progress of the reaction if it is a reversible one and equilibrium has been reached
