Biology Tuition Singapore – Plant Nutrition Misconception

Biology Tuition Singapore – Plant Nutrition Misconception

Misconception 1

Epidermal cells do not have chloroplasts. Therefore, they should not be classified as plant cells.

Correct Conception 1

Chloroplasts are not the only characteristic of plant cells. Different leaf cells are adapted in different ways to carry out photosynthesis efficiently. The lack of chloroplasts in epidermal cells enables more sunlight to penetrate into the inner mesophyll layers

Misconception 2

All plant cells have rigid cellulose cell walls. Hence, they are not able to change their shapes.

Correct Conception 2

Not all plant cells are rigid in shape. Guard cells have a thicker cell wall near the stoma. This difference in thickness enables the guard cells to bend as turgor increases.
