Significant Figures

The number of digits used to denote an exact value to a specified degree of accuracy are called significant figures

  1. All non-zero digits are significant. E.g. 12 (2 sig. fig.), 48.5 (3 sig. fig.)
  2. Zeros between non-zero digits are significant. E.g. 8.03 (3 sig. fig.)
  3. Zeros preceding the first non-zero digit are not significant. E.g. 0.003 (1 sig. fig.), 0.071 (2 sig. fig.)
  4. Zeros following a non-zero digit after the decimal point are significant. E.g. 0.900 (3 sig. fig.), 8.700 (4 sig. fig.)
