Tuition Center Singapore Physics Tuition – Kinematics Definitions
- Displacement is the measurement of distance from a reference point to another point in a certain direction. The SI unit of displacement and distance is metre (m).
- Velocity is the rate of change of displacement. Speed is the rate of change of distance. Velocity is a vector quantity whereas speed is a scalar quantity. Speed is the magnitude of velocity. The SI unit of velocity and speed is metre per second (m/s or m s-1).
- For constant speed, its value is given by: Speed = distance travelled / time taken
For non-constant speed, the average speed is given by:
Average speed = total distance travelled / total time taken.
