Tuition Center Singapore Physics Tuition – Kinematics Definitions

  1. Displacement is the measurement of distance from a reference point to another point in a certain direction. The SI unit of displacement and distance is metre (m).
  2. Velocity is the rate of change of displacement. Speed is the rate of change of distance. Velocity is a vector quantity whereas speed is a scalar quantity. Speed is the magnitude of velocity. The SI unit of velocity and speed is metre per second (m/s or m s-1).
  3. For constant speed, its value is given by: Speed  =  distance travelled / time taken

For non-constant speed, the average speed is given by:

Average speed = total distance travelled / total time taken.
