Question
Describe the process of oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondrion.
Answer
- NADH and FADH2 as electron donors to the electron transport chain in inner mitochondrial membrane
- Electrons lose energy as they are passed down a series of electron carriers of progressively lower energy level
- Energy released is used to actively transport protons via proton pump
- From matrix to inter-membrane space
- Generate proton gradient across the inner membrane
- Protons transported via proton channel of ATP synthase
- Via facilitated diffusion / down concentration gradient / chemiosmosis
- Proton motive force
- ATP synthesized from ADP and Pi by ATP synthase
- Oxygen as final electron acceptor of the ETC
- Combines with protons to form water
