Question

Describe the process of oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondrion.

Answer

  1. NADH and FADH2 as electron donors to the electron transport chain in inner mitochondrial membrane
  2. Electrons lose energy as they are passed down a series of electron carriers of progressively lower energy level
  3. Energy released is used to actively transport protons via proton pump
  4. From matrix to inter-membrane space
  5. Generate proton gradient across the inner membrane
  6. Protons transported via proton channel of ATP synthase
  7. Via facilitated diffusion / down concentration gradient / chemiosmosis
  8. Proton motive force
  9. ATP synthesized from ADP and Pi by ATP synthase
  10. Oxygen as final electron acceptor of the ETC
  11. Combines with protons to form water
