  1. An atom is the smallest particle of an element that retains the chemical properties of the element.
  2. An element is a pure substance that cannot be split up into two or more simpler substances by physical processes or by chemical processes.
  3. A compound is a pure substance that contains two or more elements chemically joined together.
  4. A molecule is a group of two or more atoms that are chemically joined together.
  5. A diatomic molecule is a molecule with two atoms.
  6. The chemical formula of a compound is the notation which shows the relative numbers of atoms of the different elements present in the compound.
  7. A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically joined together.
