Common Error 1
Since cell walls are rigid, they should be impermeable.
Correct Concept 1
The rigidity of a structure is not indicative of its permeability. The rigidity of cell walls is useful in maintaining the turgidity of plants and preventing the bursting of the cell.
Common Error 2
Cells are the same as molecules
Correct Concept 2
Cells are not the same as molecules. In fact, cells (living) are made up of non-living molecules. The relative sizes of cells range from 1-100 pm (10-6 m) while molecules are much smaller, in the range of picometers (10– ‘2m) for those like water and in nanometers (10-9m) for some like haemoglobin.
Common Error 3
Living things contain cells
Correct Concept 3
Living things are actually made up of cells
