- Filtrate is the liquid that passes through the filter paper.
- Distillation is a technique for separating a liquid by boiling the liquid and condensing the vapour. The distillate is the product obtained from condensation during distillation.
- Residue is the solid that remains on the filter paper after filtration, or the solid that remains in the distillation flask after distillation.
- Fractional distillation is a technique for separating a mixture of liquids with different boiling points. In fractional distillation, the distillation apparatus is fitted with a fractionating column.
- A pure substance is a single substance that is not mixed with other substances.
- Chromatography is a technique of using a solvent to separate the solutes present in a mixture. The chromatogram is the chromatography paper with the separated components.
- The RE value is the ratio between the distance travelled by the substance and the distance travelled by the solvent.
