  1. Filtrate is the liquid that passes through the filter paper.
  2. Distillation is a technique for separating a liquid by boiling the liquid and condensing the vapour. The distillate is the product obtained from condensation during distillation.
  3. Residue is the solid that remains on the filter paper after filtration, or the solid that remains in the distillation flask after distillation.
  4. Fractional distillation is a technique for separating a mixture of liquids with different boiling points. In fractional distillation, the distillation apparatus is fitted with a fractionating column.
  5. A pure substance is a single substance that is not mixed with other substances.
  6. Chromatography is a technique of using a solvent to separate the solutes present in a mixture. The chromatogram is the chromatography paper with the separated components.
  7. The RE value is the ratio between the distance travelled by the substance and the distance travelled by the solvent.
