A Level GP Tuition – Yakuza and Organised Crime in Japan

When one thinks of Japan, the first thing that would come to mind would be something about food, culture, technology and cleanliness. It would also be useful to be aware of a highly organised syndicate known as the Yakuza.

  • The world’s largest and ferocious syndicate is the Yamaguchi-Gumi, whom the Japan’s stock exchange estimated illegal earnings amounting to $6 billion a year
  • Due to certain technicalities in Japan’s system, they are not considered ‘illegal’ and they do have a certain public presence
  • The Yakuza’s history dates back to the Edo period (between 1603 and 1868) where small-time gangsters banded together and began to grow more powerful as they reached deep into Japan’s economy
  • They have also been known to have strong relations with conservative politicians back in the 1960s, such relations may have weakened significantly but they may not have been completely vanished
  • The nature of misdeeds conducted by the Yakuza is now shifting from the traditional mob activities to sophisticated financial crimes
